"Thou art called to labor in my vineyard, and to build up my church, and to bring forth Zion, that it may rejoice upon the hills and flourish. Behold, verily, verily, I say unto thee, thou art not called to go into the eastern countries, but thou art called to go to the Ohio. And inasmuch as my people shall assemble themselves at the Ohio, I have kept in store a blessing such as is not known among the children of men, and it shall be poured forth upon their heads. And from thence men shall go forth into all nations. Wherefore, go forth, crying with a loud voice saying: The kingdom of heavn is at hand: crying: Hosanna! Blessed be the name of the Most High God. Go forth baptizing with water, preparing the way before my face for the time of my coming." --Doctrine and Covenants 39: 13-15, 19-20

July 23, 2012

Dear Mom and Dad,

The new area is great and we are starting to find investigators. Sadly, just like the past few areas, there was not too much going on before, but we do have one really great investigator who will be baptized on August 11th.  So Ashland is an interesting place to be as an LDS missionary. It's the world headquarters of the Brethren Church which is Born Again Christians... and if dad knows anything about Born Agains, he knows that they love to bash! HAHA!  So, yes, a lot of the people here in Ashland DON'T LIKE US!  But that is not too bad because it’s actually the most active ward I have been in so far and I really like it here.  Plus we just got an add on area so we have other places to work that aren’t so anti. I have enjoyed my time here so far but I don’t think I have seen so much hate for our church in my life --  it’s a different experience. But you know me, I am just laid back and just smile at them and tell them we are true and they aren't and then just walk away... just kidding I’m much nicer than that haha. But really this isn’t too bad of an area even though I may have made it sound bad. It’s a great place and many people are nice or at least they are to our faces :).  I am just over one set of elders just like before and, yes, I will most likely be riding my bike here as well.  Oh and Elder Simmons does not know Luann and Butch - sorry...
Well tell Jesse happy birthday for me and tell him to start preparing for his mission TODAY! I wish I had read more and actually prepared more because it took me pretty much the whole first year to figure out why I was out here.  Also, if he is reading scriptures, it will make it easier to get out here. I really love it out here though and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world than where I am now.
Well, mi familia, I love you all and hope you have a wonderful week in the good ole town of CC. Oh also, on another note, Robert got the priesthood this week! I was pretty excited to hear that and he is excited to go to the temple to do baptisms. YAY! Well ,talk to you next week!

Love,

Elder Ryan Furtney
